This morning while playing, Luka got her bottom jaw caught on Joe's choke collar and began to yelp. Joe was baffled and just stood still waiting for me to do something. Seeing this as his cue, Odie leaped on Joe to kill him for hurting Luka, at which point Luka got dragged into the dog fight by her jaw. No matter how I tried, I couldn't create enough slack to get Luka free, nor enough fear in Odie to make him stop attacking Joe.
My husband came out and doused us all with a jug of water, giving Luka extra helpings right down the schnoz thinking she was the instigator. He did also grab Odie. But when I told him what I really needed was a bolt cutter, he ran off, letting go of Odie, who then resumed his assault. Furious, I abandoned my attempts to help Luka, and took off after the old dog, promising that if I caught him I would take him to the vet and put him down, which I think he understood, because he let go of Joe and gimped to the porch as fast as his creaky legs could carry him.
Free from my useless help, Luka managed to twist free of Joe and spent a good deal of time looking daggers at us from behind the brush at the far end of the yard before she would allow my daughter to lure her inside.
Now I remember why I reserve getting clean and dressed for the very last minute before leaving the house.
